PEOPLE He wouldn’t – not that we want to give real serial killers any ideas, but come on. “That’s a clue that the show isn’t shot in Miami,” he pointed out. “Another clue is that all of the Cubans look somehow like Mexicans or Puerto Ricans, and all my Cuban friends are outraged,” Lindsay divulged. It is said that in real estate the only three factors that matter are location, location, and location – and in Lindsay’s Dexter series, the same argument rings true. So, if it’s so important, why isn’t the show shot in Miami? You can blame that on South Florida’s high expectancy for natural disasters. “The first episode was shot during the summer when we had four hurricanes,” Linsdsay said. “So now the insurance company wants such a huge bond for hurricane insurance that it’s not worth it.” Aside from location being essential, getting down the character of Dexter is just as important—if not more. DEXTER MORGAN Since a reader creates such a specific visual of this man, matching the fictional creation to a real-life counterpart has to be a masterpiece in the making for the show to be a success. Believe it or not, when Lindsay recevied the call with the news that Michael C. Hall was cast as Dexter, he was not too pleased. “I thought that decision was the worst thing I ever heard in my life,” said Lindsay. “The first time I walked onto the set I walked right past him a couple of times. He didn’t look like the guy from Six Feet Under at all. He was taller, thinner, his face had changed —everything was different. The first line I saw him say on camera, I thought, That’s him!” Lindsay said, happily surprised. CASTING IS SERVED Another very important element in Lindsay’s novels that have translated well from page to screen is Harry Morgan’s (Dexter’s adopted father) ‘Code of Harry.’ “I have friends who are cops and you can’t have this job for more than two weeks and not realize that there’s a great big hole between justice and law,” Lindsay said. “You get into it because you want to uphold justice and you end up doing law instead. You watch the bad guys you bring in walk out the door. Given the shot, if you imagine Harry as a career police officer, and he sees young Dexter and knows that this kid is going to become a killer no matter what --it can’t be changed. That’s what the research says. So why not do some good with that? It makes a lot of sense,” Lindsay explained why Dexter only kills criminals who ‘deserve’ to be killed. For all you fans who cannot get enough of Lindsay’s creation, don’t worry, there’s more novels to come! “The book I’m finishing now is about cannibalism, called Dexter is Delicious. That’s one of my favorite titles. I was recently in Australia (on a book tour for Dexter by Design which was released in Australia in February 2009) and they’re crazy about him and want him to visit Australia. So I thought that Dexter Down Under would be a good title,” stated Lindsay. Lindsay has a very regulated daily writing schedule at his home office in Cape Coral, where he lives with wife, Hilary Hemingway and their three children. If you’re lucky, you can catch Lindsay at future book fairs or during his many visits to Miami at Books and Books in Coral Gables. And don’t miss the fifth season of Dexter this fall.
