PEOPLE Novelist Jeff Lindsay Dishes about Dexter Words by Marla E. Schwartz Jeff Lindsay’s first book in his deftly created Dexter novel series is Darkly Dreaming Dexter, and is the basis for SHOWTIME’S number one rated and two- time Emmy-nominated television series, Dexter. The TV series recently wrapped up its fourth season and has thrilled us all, especially the final episode. If you’re the one person on the planet who has not seen this show, I’m not giving it away. First, read the books and then watch the program. The marvelous actor who brings Dexter Morgan to life is the mesmerizing, Golden Globe-winner Michael C. Hall, who portrayed David Fisher on the hit HBO drama, Six Feet Under. Other recognizable actors who have made guest appearances on the show are Keith Carradine, Jimmy Smits and the Academy Award- nominated, Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe-winner John Lithgow as a suburban father living a dual life as ‘Trinity’ —one of America’s deadliest serial killers. As Lindsay took the stage at the Miami Book Fair International, held at Miami Dade College, the air filled with rapt anticipation as die-hard fans recognized him from his cameo role in the tenth episode of Dexter’s third season. “I want to thank the Miami-Dade Police Department for your support, your good work and your service,” Lindsay started off with. “It’s odd to me the communities of people that Dexter seems to speak to, but one of them is definitely law enforcement. Every event I’ve ever done, there have been a couple of guys in the back standing there and I know my back is covered. And considering some of the other folks who like Dexter, this is a good thing,” said Lindsay graciously. Rousing audiences with his showmanship and gentle (yes, gentle) wit, Lindsay discussed his new book that has its anti-hero chasing a killer who prides himself on mutilation art, and then took a Q & A. WELCOME TO MIAMI This Miami native knows the city like the back of his hand. His geographical knowledge of the area is very well represented in his fictional depiction of the seemingly pleasant serial killer named Dexter, whose escapades have him tooling around all over the place. However, many times there’s a variation in the adaptation process of how much of the story stays true to the realities of actual fictional circumstances. “The second season opens with divers finding forty of Dexter’s bodies where he dumped them in sixty-feet of water. For TV it’s a great dramatic twist, but in reality, I grew up in Miami and to find sixty-feet of water you have to work,” Lindsay explained. “And once you find it you go a hundred yards further and you find three-thousand feet of water – so why would he do that?” MIAMI LIVING 81
