Contributors CLAUDIA PAREDES – INTERN Claudia was born in Lima, Peru. At the age of 12, she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she spent most of her teenage years. During that transition she moved to Moscow for a year, where she learned Russian. Claudia returned to Cambridge and continued her studies at Boston University. This May she received her B.S. in Communication with a degree in Advertising and a minor in Russian and Eastern European Studies. Although Claudia chose to pursue a career in advertising, she always dreamed of being a journalist. She has been consistently involved with different publications. Throughout high school she was part of the newspaper staff, completed a journalism program with The Harvard Crimson, and wrote for the local newspaper The Cambridge Chronicle while in college. Last year Claudia began to write for ML and MacDirectory. “I like to write about local spots and encourage people to go there with my words,” she says. This January Claudia moved to San Francisco where she took a class at Academy of Art University to sharpen her design skills, and she interned at HarperOne to learn more about the book publishing industry. “I really enjoy writing, from research papers to fun articles; it’s something that I will always find a way to get involved with no matter where I am in life.” NATALIA LEOS – WRITER Writer, expensive footwear aficionado, and currently an Account Coordinator at Get Ink PR in Miami Beach, Natalia directs her creative energy into her passion for writing. Her in-house training at Orlando Style Magazine complemented skills learned at the University of Central Florida, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations. During this internship, she honed her skills (and passion) as a writer and her ability to bring a fresh, unexpected style. An avid reader, insatiable cook, seasoned traveler and fashion enthusiast, Natalia enjoys jogging and spending time with her Yorkshire terrier, Lucky. Natalia moved to Miami after graduation and while still getting used to it, she really loves its cultural diversity, excellent food and beautiful beaches. MARTA OPPENHEIMER – WRITER Marta Alicia Oppenheimer is the oldest of four sisters. She is also a loving daughter, brand new aunt/godmother, loyal friend, awesome sister-in-law, and a fabulous girlfriend --just ask a certain Cuban hunk. This fiery redhead received two bachelor’s degrees from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and a master’s degree from Pratt Institute of Art in New York City, where she spent 12 years working as an artist. She moved to sunny Miami in 1999 to get away from the snow and winter clothes that accompanied her years of schooling. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, she was ready again for warm weather, short pretty dresses, palm trees, and hurricane warnings. Always a multi-tasker, Marta currently has two careers. She is an Art Director and a freelance writer for Miami Living. When not accumulating frequent flyers miles traveling back and forth to Puerto Rico to visit her beautiful new niece, her free time is spent surrounded by furry creatures. Marta is a volunteer with Caring About the Strays, a non-profit animal rescue group based in Miami Springs. She lives with her wonderful rescued dogs and spoiled, fat, rescued cats in an old artsy house that barely has the space for yet another street fair work of art, another book, or another pair of wannabe-converses. Then again, there is no such thing as too many shoes! JASON MAHSHIE – PHOTOGRAPHER Since childhood, Jason Mahshie has maintained a lifelong passion for photography. Born and raised in rural upstate New York, he’s the youngest of 7 children, and one of 2 sets of twins (but not the evil one). Jason is also an accomplished figure skater, a pastime he started at 10 and continues to enjoy (35 plus years later). Jason received his BFA in Photography from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts and is the recipient of a Lightwork Grant. He has guest lectured at many fine universities, such as Rochester Institute Of Technology’s advertising department. He has lived and worked in Europe and the US, with a concentration on editorial work in Paris and Milan, and has photographed everyone from top fashion models to Olympic athletes and celebrities. His work has appeared in GQ, Men's Health, Esquire, Elle, NY Times Magazine, DNR, Sports Illustrated, Ocean Drive, Marie Claire, and Votre Beaute, among others. His advertising work includes Perry Ellis, Nike, Original Penguin, Jantzen, Avon, Hickey-Freeman, Air Canada, Coty Cosmetics, Oldsmobile, Lord & Taylor, Woolrich, as well as numerous department stores. In a less commercial vein, Jason continues to shoot his own personal projects and self-published a book of collected works in 1999. He currently lives in the South Florida area. www.mahshiephoto.com www.mahshiephoto.blogspot.com 18 MIAMI LIVING
