SPECIAL EVENT: MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION WEEK SWIM A Time to Swim Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim is Here Words by Martin Haro Do you hear that? That, my friends, is the sound of a Miami summer. It is the cool breeze blowing on South Beach, the clubs bopping with the sound of the latest jams, and the siren song of bare feet strutting down the runways set up around the legendary pool at The Raleigh Hotel, which once again will host the annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in July. Scheduled for July 15-19, this will be, as it has become a true SoBe tradition, the hottest – and sexiest – event of the season. Leading designers, including Trina Turk, True Religion, Ed Hardy, among others, will show their latest collections, as beautiful female and male models rule the runway wearing next to nothing — just how we like it. Everyone will be there, eyes beyond-peeled on the sixth edition of Swim week, and I do mean everybody: editors, buyers, retailers, scenesters, and wannabes, all of whom will be chomping at the bit, texting like crazy, trying to gain access to one of the hard-to-get-into shows…or make it into the hotel to get a free drink or score some swag. Celebrities like Kristin Cavallari, Billy Zane, singer Craig David, Richie Rich, Miami’s own Elaine Lancaster, and Dennis Rodman, as well as Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian, and actress Jamie- Lynn Sigler have attended the event before – and in this day and age of Kardashian and Jersey Shore dominance on SoBe, you can bet on catching a glimpse of these dubious celebrities in the front row of more than one show. Whaddya gonna do, right? The L.A. Girl One of the designers who has shown during Swim before is Trina Turk, a California girl who came of age in Seattle, and went back home to make a name for herself. “I learned to sew when I was 11,” she told Miami Living, “and have always been interested in clothing and fashion. After I received a bachelor’s in fashion design from the University of Washington, I worked for 12 years for other companies, mainly junior sportswear, prior to launching my own label in 1995.” Swimwear, Turk says, was a natural progression from her print- oriented, Southern California-inspired ready-to-wear beginnings. Strong colors and prints, she adds, are also a must. “I prefer simple silhouettes with a minimum of detail. I like to have the fabric speak for itself as opposed to complicated styling that obscures the fabrication,” she said. Turk describes the Trina Turk clients as women who range from 20 to 50 in age, women who love fashion but have busy, fulfilled lives and “don’t have time to fuss with fashion.” Trina Turk is for women who appreciate great fit and fabric, and a cool design. A look at Trina Turk’s 2010 collection! 30 MIAMI LIVING
