CHARITY Friday, May 18 MDF Golf Tournament Turnberry Isle, Miami 8:00am – Registration/Media Interviews 9:00am – Golf begins As soon as the sun appeared Friday morning, I dusted off my irons, laced up my Foot Joys, and sped to the greens at Turnberry Isle. Typically, whenever you're at a golf course, one doesn't expect to find a giant NFL mascot standing inline at the ProShop purchasing a couple of Titleists. However, that's exactly where I found TD (aka, touchdown). On the actual course, Dolphins alumni Jed Weaver and the JM Lexus No. 2 team tied with James McKnight and the Tony Galvin team after 18 long holes. After witnessing several spectacular swings from Dolphins' players such as John Denney (long snapper), Dan Carpenter (kicker), Brandon Fields (punter), Tyrone Culver (safety), and Richie Incognito (guard), the tournament concluded with a delicious luncheon. Both professional athletes and amateur wannabes alike devoured everything from Anthony's Coal Fire Pizza, Sushi Maki, Mischa's Cupcakes, and Twil's Pretzels. What more could you ask for? MDF Hook & Tackle Captain's Party Miami Beach Marina 300 Alton Road Miami Beach, FL 33139 6:00pm – Media Availability Immediately preceding the golf tournament, I found myself with just enough time to shower and shave before the start of the Hook & Tackle Captain's Party. Held at the Miami Beach Marina, this extremely popular event featured live entertainment, an open bar (serving everything from vodka shooters to rum runners), and a silent auction. Midway through the party, Matt Moore received the Dan Marino Most Valuable Player Award while Karlos Dansby won the Don Shula Leadership Award. Additional winners included Dan Carpenter and Brandon Fields, who captured the Nat Moore Community Service Award as well as anyone else who managed to spend time with Stephen Ross, Jeff Ireland, or Joe Philbin. Dinner and desserts capped off the evening with meals from Bokamper's Sports Bar & Grill, Bru's Room Sports Grill, Shula's Steakhouse, and the Melting Pot. Saturday, May 19 MDF Fishing Tournament Miami Beach Marina 300 Alton Road Miami Beach, FL 33139 7:30–8:30am – Media, Photo Opportunity for "Lines In" 4:30–5:30pm – Media, Photo Opportunity for "Hooters Weigh In" On the last official day of Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin and Fins Weekend Co-Chair and Dolphins Alumnus Rob Konrad at Hook and Tackle Captain's Party Jimmy Wilson tees off at Fins Weekend Golf Tournament at Miami Turnberry Isle FinsWeekend, Miami's best anglers gathered at the Miami Beach Marina for their famous fishing tournament. Presented by Alterna Financial, this tournament gives everyone the chance to enjoy a day out on the deep blue sea, alongside a designated Dolphins player or alumni, and catch as many sailfish, kingfish, tuna or mahi mahi as they can find. By the end of the afternoon, the crew of O-Sea-D (consisting of Michael Vera, Jorge Villar, Eduardo Gonzalez, Jose Lopez, and good luck charm Matt Moore) delivered 195 pounds of fresh fish to capture the title. Their prize, being the envy of every Dolphins' fan, was a roundtrip on the team charter to a regular season Dolphins away game. Afterwards, at the HMY/Contender Awards Ceremony, four 2013 Super Bowl tickets (with airfare) and a 21-foot Contender with a Mercury Engine were auctioned off on behalf of the MDF. It was the perfect ending to a spectacular event. Chances are, I'll see you there next year.
