Contributors JOSEPH LLANES Photographer Joseph Llanes was raised by his father and stepmother as one of eight children. Growing up in Mexico, Llanes turned stray dogs and abandoned homes into a child's dream playground. This ability to see beyond the surface of objects would carry into his later work as abandoned locations and the periphery surrounding them would become beautiful backdrops for classic portraiture. Llanes' work ultimately seems to revolve around themes of discovery, exploration and an existential desire to create correlation through the lens of a camera. Llanes graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design with a BFA in Photography. As a student, he was awarded the prestigious APA Best of Show Award and the Fuji Scholarship. Since then, he has won awards for PDN and C.A. Llanes was the Communication Arts Fresh Photographer in the 2008 Design Annual. Llanes has photographed an extensive list of notable names in entertainment, including movie stars such as Jeff Bridges, Anna Paquin, Matt Dillon…, and musicians like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, Rihanna, Gavin Rossdale, The Black Keys, Lisa Marie Presley… His work has been published in Billboard, Rolling Stone, Spin, New York magazine and L.A. Weekly. Online's self-appointed "Desk SoBe" – likes to hustle. He has lived in Miami for 12 years during which he has gotten to "go out, drink at many an open bar, watch many a free movie, and write about it. How friggin' sweet is that?" Born and raised in Lima, Peru, the guy is happiest sitting in a nicely air-conditioned movie theater, or hanging in a corner with his five best friends (bubbly in hand), or "doing something ridikolous for work," like waiting to see if Adam Levine will change his mind about not doing print press at some red carpet. "I really love it here, and writing about being here and everything there is to do and that I have gotten to do here," he says. "They don't call it the Magic City for nothing." Among the events he has covered are the openings of many a bar/hotel/restaurant, as well as dos like Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, New York's Fashion Week, the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival (a personal fave, especially if there's bacon involved), the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF), and the MTV Video Music Awards. He has worked with MGLFF on its programming committee in the past, and served on committees organizing the Task Force's Miami Recognition Dinner, a.k.a. Sparkle, since 2010. He also keeps a blog, moviemartin.blogspot.com, where he shares his take on all things pop culture. And he's on Twitter, too, @moviemartin MARTA A. OPPENHEIMER The oldest of four sisters, Marta A. Oppenheimer is a loving daughter, aunt/godmother, loyal friend, and awesome sister-in-law. This fiery redhead received two bachelor's degrees from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and a master's degree from Pratt Institute of Art in New York City, where she spent 12 years working as an artist. She moved to sunny Miami in 1999 to get away from the snow and winter clothes that accompanied her years of schooling. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, she was ready to return to warm weather, short pretty dresses, palm trees, and hurricane warnings. Always a multi-tasker, Marta currently has two careers. She is an Art Director, and a freelance writer for Miami Living. When not accumulating frequent flyer miles traveling back and forth to Puerto Rico, her free time is spent surrounded by furry creatures. Marta is the volunteer event planner for a non-profit animal rescue group, Caring About the Strays. She lives with her wonderful rescued dogs and spoiled, fat, rescued cats in an old artsy house that barely has space for yet another street fair work of art, book, or pair of wannabe- converses. Then again, there is no such thing as too many shoes! 16 MIAMI LIVING
