TECH What the tech is going on? Here are some upcoming tech events to tune into Words by Craig Agranoff Believe it or not, Florida, specifically South Florida, is a happenin' place when it comes to technology. Sure, when people talk about tech, they often think of or refer to Silicon Valley, but what they refer to is a specific type of entrepreneurship that seems to fester in Northern California. Here in Florida, we have a different type of startup flurry. Startups here tend to be more inclusive, often include a lot more collaboration between people who aren't necessarily "employed" by the startups they're working with, and we tend to do things with more focus on the technology than on the suits and ties and business interview end of things. This more social way of doing business means that we have a lively and strong stream of socially-based events surrounding our technology businesses. The following are the late winter and spring events coming to South Florida for your tech startup pleasure. 21st Annual Florida Venture Capital Conference Held January 31 through February 1 in Naples, this conference showcases local late-stage startups as high growth private companies that are examples of what can be done with a lot of work and a good idea. The conference caters to investors and capitalists interested in looking for opportunities and being asked to be one of the conference's showcases is considered a premium ice breaker towards entering the big leagues of tech business. SuperConf 2012 Superconf.net Beginning on February 17, this two-day event features 8 great startups and 8 speakers. Day one includes a Startup Blast Off, where new companies launch products to the public in a competition in which a panel of 5 founders/angel investors and VCs judge the product and business model. The second day focuses on the core of SuperConf, web development and entrepreneurship with expert speakers in bleeding edge tech and design. WordCamp Miami 2012 2012.miami.wordcamp.org WordCamp Miami 2012 is the annual WordPress camp held in South Florida. It's also being held on February 17-18 and is an extension of the very active WordPress Miami Meetup group here. It's a community-supported event in which most of the speakers, event showcases, and dialogue are from volunteers active in the WordPress community of South Florida. Like WordPress itself, it's a truly open source event with a lot of great topics, free trade of information, and fun. Everyone from developers to designers to blog lovers are there and networking is really the name of the game. BarCamp Palm Beach Facebook.com/BarCampPalmBeach BarCamp Palm Beach starts February 25th and features a lot of collaboration and social networking. The "unconference" is a meeting of the minds, as it were, for tech and entrepreneurship. Sponsored by local area businesses and tireless volunteers, it's becoming popular quickly. These are just the beginning of events coming to South Florida. Things really start kicking in late spring and summer time here. We literally host hundreds of tech events throughout South Florida every year. It's an amazing community to live in. ML MIAMI LIVING 57
