Schwartz The Deep Blue Sea There's something dreamlike that happens to spectators once the lights go down in a movie theater. As everyone waits for the film to begin –knowing they're surrounded by mostly strangers -- a kinship is felt between viewers and those who appear on the big screen. This season the Miami International Film Festival, presented by Miami-Dade College and sponsored by the Miami Film Society, returns with the magic that is their top quality films. The 29th edition of the MIFF runs from March 4-13. [Visit miamifilmfestival.com for details and comprehensive information which wasn't available at press time.] The MIFF is noted as being one of the best Ibero-centric film festivals in the country, featuring movies from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. It also features impressive gala premieres, screenings, documentaries, REEL seminars, shorts, Indies, and a series of panels, discussions and seminars. This year MIFF has created two new categories: Cinema 360, a non-competition category and DOC-YOU-UP, a documentary section featuring a collection of new works. The Festival's signature Knight Ibero- American Competition boasts its strongest lineup in years. "The Ibero-American films submitted to our competition this year are of exceptional quality," said MIFF's executive director Jaie Laplante. "With an intriguing mix of thrillers, dramas, romances and cutting-edge work, the competing films are rich, impactful and brilliantly engaging." 50 MIAMI LIVING The Diary of Preston Plummer The films in this category are: NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERES: The Porcelain Horse (Mejor no hablar de ciertas cosas) from Ecuador; I'd Receive the Worst News From Your Beautiful Lips (Eu Receberia As Piores Notícias De Seus Lindos Lábios) from Brazil; Pescador from Columbia; Zoo (Zoológico) from Chile. EAST COAST PREMIERES: Blood of My Blood (Sangue do Meu Sangue) from Portugal; Madrid, 1987 from Spain; Violeta Went to Heaven (Violeta se fue a los cielos) from Chile. U.S. PREMIERES: The Cat Vanishes (El gato desaparece) from Argentina; The Sleeping Voice (La voz dormida) from Spain. FLORIDA PREMIERE: Bonsái from Chile/Argentina/Portugal/France. Another festival feat will be the screening of The Deep Blue Sea adapted from Terence Rattigan's play of the same name, directed by Terence Davies. Starring Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale, it's about a judge's wife who engages in an affair with an RAF pilot. Another exciting film lined-up is the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, an intimate chronology of her fifty year reign as the "Empress of Fashion." She was the editor-in-chief of American Vogue (1962-1971), fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar (1962-1971), launched Twiggy, advised Jackie O and coined some of Bonsai fashion's most eloquent proverbs. She followed these jobs by popularizing the historical collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The independent film The Diary of Preston Plummer is making its World Premiere at MIFF. Walking the red carpet will be producer Jane Kosek, writer-director Sean Ackerman and the entire cast: Trevor Morgan, Rumer Willis (yes, she's Demi and Bruce's daughter), Robert Loggia, Erin Dilly and Christopher Cousins. "After a decade of work, writer-director Sean Ackerman and I realized our dream of filming The Diary of Preston Plummer in beautiful Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island with an outstanding cast and crew," Jane said. "We are now realizing our second dream of having our World Premiere at the preeminent Miami International Film Festival. We couldn't be more excited about being able to come full circle and share Diary for the first time with the amazing people of Florida."
