GO GREEN Celebrate the Holidays with Eco Chic Style Kimberly Pinkson, co-founder of ecomom & ecomom.com, shares her tips on how to ring in the new season more eco-friendly Words by Kimberly Pinkson From palm trees aglow with lights to yachts adorned with toy Santas at the helm, there's good reason many flock to Miami for the holidays. But even gorgeous Miami can use a little more green this season. (After all green is the new black in 2012.) Never fear Virginia, we still believe in Jolly Old St. Nick, Hanukkah gelt, and dancing 'til dawn! This year, ring in some high style, knowing that what's good for you, is good for our world —and there's no better way to celebrate. Here are some simple tips to get you started. Keep it Simple Remember the true spirit of the season is about spending quality time with friends and family. Stop worrying about making things perfect and focus on enjoying the process. Your family will remember more joy from the occasion if you're having fun than if you're stressed out over a crooked tree. Rather than driving to go buy more decorations made of plastic, walk around your neighborhood and find pretty shells to decorate with. Reconsider your Giving If you think of our economy as the world's largest democracy, then every dollar you spend is a vote for what kind of world you want to live in – and leave for the children. Many toys, home décor items, and hostess gifts like candles contain harmful chemicals such as synthetic fragrance and dyes – both of which have been linked to increased risk of asthma, allergies, and diseases such as cancer. Opt for products made without toxic ingredients and keep our waterways, food supplies, and air quality healthy and thriving. Also, give gifts that include their own wrapping, or wrap with recycled paper and reusable bags. An extra 25 MILLION tons of garbage will be generated this season and overflowing landfills means more air pollution and increased risk of allergies and respiratory disease. Hats, scarves, and beautiful linens make wonderful wrapping that won't add to the waste stream and pollution. Be Wise about Food Consumption No, I'm not talking about counting the number of calories, because frankly, there's just no getting around the fact that you're going to indulge and let's be honest, half the fun of the holidays is about the fabulous food! Balance it out with more exercise – taking walks with the whole family before or after a heavy meal provides extra time to enjoy one another's company. And make sure that what you eat is made of ingredients free from pesticides, synthetic hormones, GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), artificial preservatives and food dyes. Most of all, keep in mind that a healthy holiday season is not about sacrificing but about rediscovering simple joys. Celebrating in ways that are good for you and our world is ultimately most rewarding for you and your family. ML MIAMI LIVING 35
