EVENTS Local Holiday Happenings Experience the Magic City in all its enchanting & festive glory Words by Marta Oppenheimer Holiday season is extra special in Miami. Not because of the lack of snow to shovel from the front door to the car. Not because of the absence of layering on scarves, sweaters and mittens to survive the freezing cold. Not because of the ever-present beautiful palm trees. The season is extra special because of the abundance of activities in the Magic City! For the bookworms (and the not so bookworms) the Miami Book Fair International offers a week of books. From November 13th to November 20th there is a venue with a book for every member of the family. Not sure what to read? Participate in readings and discussions by famous authors from all over the world and discover a favorite. The Street Fair opens during the last weekend of the Book Fair. It consists of rows and rows of colorful booths with any book imagined on a variety of topics and languages. Over 250 publishers and booksellers participate in the event. Kids enjoy many games, activities, and storytelling at Children's Alley. Even teenagers can get the latest Graphic Novel and meet the illustrators. For the serious book lover, there are signed first editions and collectibles. 50 MIAMI LIVING Find that perfect book at miamibookfair.com It would not be Christmas time in Miami without an entire forest of twinkling colorful lights astounding daily commuters. From downtown Miami to homes in Kendall and Homestead the west side of the highway provides a spectacular view of Santa's Enchanted Forest making the day after day commute more bearable. This is when locals know that Santa is on his way. Ho! Ho! Ho! From November 3rd to January 3rd, 2012, Miami is host to the world's largest Christmas theme park. With over 100 rides, shows, and games, Santa's Enchanted Forest is also home to South Florida's tallest Christmas tree. There is something for everyone, even those not into chilling roller coasters. Enjoy the food, music, and live shows. Pose for an antique photo or a photo with Santa, dunk an obnoxious clown in a pool of water, or get face paint resembling a tiger or butterfly. There are kiddie rides for the little ones too short to pass the "you must reach here to ride." Win an overstuffed bear for the lady by popping balloons with darts or hooking a giant ring over the neck of a glass bottle. Take pleasure in nightly shows like Cirque Equinox, Gifford & Roy Magic, or be thrilled by the Motorcycle Globe of Death. Plan ahead to see them all! santasenchantedforest.com Viernes Culturales or Cultural Fridays, Little Havana's free monthly arts and culture festival, happens all year long.
