American Boy Tommy Hilfiger is one cool dude Words by Martin Haro Cool indeed, and not just because as an iconic American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger has been an industry force to be reckoned with for 25 years, but because he was happy to talk to Miami Living at a party he hosted last December. ML did not have a pre-set appointment to talk with Hilfiger, so that is what makes Hilfiger one cool dude. He said a friendly "Yes" on the spot—and without making us jump through hoops. He did not have to make time for us—he had about 600 guests to mingle with at the party he and Vanity Fair co-hosted at The Raleigh Hotel during Art Basel Miami Beach last year to celebrate Free Arts NYC— but there he was in one of the hotel's cabanas, with a smile on his face, talking about his career, his tireless charity work, and his love of Miami. Firstly, let us tell you about what is new with Hilfiger. His company will open the first Tommy Hilfiger store in Miami Beach, right smack in the heart of South Beach at 616 Collins Ave., this season. This will be his second South Florida location and ninth freestanding Tommy Hilfiger retail space in the United States. "I am thrilled to be opening our South Beach store," Hilfiger said. "With more than 12,000-square-feet of space, the store will combine the hip and vibrant culture of South Beach with our brand's signature style. "My Spring 2009 collection is about luxury and about color … about sexy dresses and flowing fabrics. It's very chic, and now you can find it here. And I hope you all will like it." Miami, he says, is an energetic and international city, as well as the gateway to the Americas, so he is looking forward to offering his "Classic American Cool" design aesthetic to South Beach locals and tourists. The store not only will feature pieces from the Tommy Hilfiger collection but also the best pieces from the American and European sportswear line, as well as the men's and women's swimwear and men's suiting. Its mezzanine level will house the women's collection, and also will feature high-end vintage selections from some of fashion's most prominent designers. The two-story, freestanding Tommy Hilfiger store's exterior will feature a crisp white-trimmed, light blue façade that vividly incorporates South Beach's historic Art Deco design. Lush bougainvillea plants will cascade from the rooftop, creating a thoroughly South Florida atmosphere. 66 MIAMI LIVING FASHION EXCLUSIVE! Tommy Hilfiger with Hilary Swank
