The Penny Back Boyz Words by Martin Haro Every city has a group of people who make its nightlife a little bit more exciting. New York has The Misshapes, and Miami has The Penny Back Boyz. A South Beach-based quartet, the PBB are Tony Ferro, Melvin Hernandez, and Alex and Daniel De Marchena, a group of friends who noticed the Magic City's gay scene was "on the decline," if you will. At early parties, they used "Penny Back" as a marketing strategy. The idea was to give a penny back at the door for a free drink. Then people began referring to them as The Penny Back Boyz and the name stuck. So what makes a Penny Back Boyz party a Penny Back Boyz party? "A great vibe, hot people, funky music, and visual entertainment," Ferro said. "A mix of trendsetters, scenesters, models, fashionistas, metrosexuals, drag divas, break dancers, and '80s punks. A PBB party really is reminiscent of old school South Beach. We play a mix of '80s, house, pop, R&B, and commercial hip-hop." This season you can find The Penny Back Boyz hosting Saturday night at Score, Sunday at Aero Bar, Monday night at The Chat Noir Club at Dream Nightclub, and Tuesday at Rokbar.
