Marcus Jansen Announces CounterPoint Art Book One of the world’s most power modern expressionism voices, Marcus Antonius Jansen, will release CounterPoint, a new museum-quality art book featuring 53 works from the past decade, on October 31, 2026. The publication marks 40 years of his artistic career and offers readers a closer look at his creative process, with many of the featured works being presented publicly for the first time. Unlike his previous publications, CounterPoint gives Jansen full creative control over the selection, content, and narrative. Each artwork was personally chosen by the artist and is accompanied by his own reflections on its inspiration, meaning, and underlying message. The book traces Jansen’s work since 2016, examining the social, political, and psychological themes that have shaped his artistic practice. Four Decades of Artistic Expression The publication coincides with two milestones in Jansen’s career. The first marks 40 years since he began his artistic journey in 1986, moving from the graffiti culture of the 1980s into a painting practice recognized internationally for its social commentary and expressionist approach. The second commemorates 20 years since Jerome Donson, then director of traveling exhibitions at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, recognized Jansen’s work in 2006. Donson compared his approach to the socially critical Ashcan School, identifying Jansen as an innovator in modern expressionism. Throughout his career, Jansen has explored subjects including power, conflict, colonialism, and social structures, using painting and mixed media to examine and deconstruct contemporary as well as historic narratives.
