London Origins The story began in 1898, when 20-year-old London clockmaker Maurice A. Rapport created his first timepiece. Its success encouraged him to establish M. A. Rapport & Co. Ltd., which went on to produce clocks for homes across Europe, Asia, and America. For much of the 20th century, the company was particularly recognized for its grandfather clocks and handcrafted carriage clocks. These early creations established a reputation for precision, traditional woodworking, and attention to detail. As the luxury watch industry evolved, Rapport expanded into accessories for mechanical timepieces. The company pioneered watch winders in the United Kingdom, developing devices that gently rotate automatic watches to maintain their power reserves when they are not being worn. Today, the business remains family-owned. Derek Rapport, the founder’s grandson, serves as chairman, while fourth-generation family members Katie Goldblatt and Oliver Rapport are directors. Collector Essentials Rapport’s products combine traditional cabinet making with modern engineering. Materials include burr walnut, macassar wood, full-grain leather, nappa leather, and polished lacquer finishes. Among its best known creations is the Heritage collection, featuring wooden watch boxes designed to store and display valuable timepieces. The colorful Evo single watch winder, finished with lacquer for its high gloss finish, offers a more contemporary interpretation of the company’s craftsmanship. For collectors with larger watch collections, the Paramount range includes cabinet-style winders accommodating nine to twenty watches. These devices can be programmed for rotation direction and turns per day to accommodate the requirements of different automatic watch movements. The distinction is important for serious collectors. Automatic mechanical watches are powered by the movement of the wearer’s wrist, and a properly configured winder can help keep them running between uses. This can be particularly convenient for watches with calendar complications that require resetting when their power reserve runs down. Rapport’s international retail presence includes luxury destinations such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, and MR PORTER. The company has also collaborated with MR PORTER on an exclusive leather watch case created for the retailer’s tenth anniversary.
