Museum MOCA North Miami The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) celebrates Miami Art Week with a public reception on Tuesday, December 5, featuring exhibitions, Jamea Richmond-Edwards: Ancient Future and Juan Francisco Elso: Por América, as well as curator-led tours of each exhibition on Saturday, December 9. Jamea Richmond-Edwards: Ancient Future delves into the realms of Afro-futurism and Black mythologies, highlighting Richmond-Edwards’ signature paintings, new film explorations and immersive installations. A monumental painting will serve as the centerpiece, reflecting the artist’s innovative approach to art-making. Ancient Future will also feature a site-specific installation with a new video work, showcasing a performance by a majorette dance team. During Miami Art Week a live performance will be staged throughout the MOCA building, recreating the procession from the video, including majorettes and a trio of musicians. Juan Francisco Elso: Por América offers a captivating retrospective of the brief but influential career of the late Cuban artist Juan Francisco Elso (1956-1988). The exhibition presents the largest survey of Elso’s career to-date, showcasing the evolution of his practice, from his experimentation with new materials to incorporating spirituality, ritual, and decolonial ideals. Por América includes more than 70 works by over 30 artists, including Elso, Glenn Ligon, Tania Bruguera, Belkis Ayón, and new commissions by Tiona Nekkia McClodden and Reynier Leyva Novo. Also on view will be Art on the Plaza artist Chris Friday’s Narcissist, a large-scale, free-standing metal figure gazing at its reflection in the Museum’s fountain. The work symbolizes Black art’s self-celebration of beauty without revealing deeper emotions, especially when placed in a public contemporary art space.
