TRAVEL FEATURE The Apple of Times Square's Eye Hotel Mela Words by Vanessa Pascale Steps away from Broadway's neon lights is where you'll find Hotel Mela (mela translates to apple in Italian). As they say, it's all about: location, location, location. With easy accessibility to the subway, the theater district and shops galore, the hotel is at the epicenter of it all. What more could you possibly ask for when it comes to accommodations? Beyond the revolving door, a large bowl of apples, suitably, awaits at the front desk along with the hotel's attentive and amiable staff. The boutique hotel's lobby is contemporary in style, extending back toward the elevators where a cozy seating area is nestled for guests to peruse the complimentary newspapers and relish a brief respite. Hotel Mela has created a soothing retreat laced with Italian and New York influences. The 230 rooms are styled in a neutral palette punched up with dashes of chartreuse, sienna, and cranberry, and boast sleek silver light fixtures juxtaposed against dark wood furnishings. Guestrooms (with twin, double, queen and kind beds) and suites are offered, the latter are appointed names like the Mela, Desire and Executive Junior Suite. For those looking for something with a bit more flair, one of their two penthouse suites should do the trick. Sitting 17 stories high, with a space ranging in size from 700 to 82 MIAMI LIVING 875 square feet, the ultra-modern suites are decadent, to say the least, dripping in luxurious accoutrements and fabrics like, Mamba leather and silk. Additionally, the views from this tier are astounding. Rooms are replete with a LCD TV, large desk, LaVazza Espresso Makers, mini-bar, comfy beds with premium Egyptian cotton, a MP3 docking station + CD player and free Wi-Fi – naturally, the suites boast a few more special extras. Their bathrooms are an elegant, clean-lined oasis with a floor-to-ceiling-glass-enclosed shower, waffle-weave robes, and H20+ spa toiletries. Limited room service is also available, and is prepared by the bistro below. Enjoy a bite in the comfort of your hotel room. Why not? You're on vacation. Saju Bistro, Bar & Restaurant is the eatery onsite. The charming restaurant is bathed in soft lighting, and has a genuinely warm feel about it. The menu offers decadent French Provencal fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and an extensive, and impressive, wine collection. Whet your appetite with dishes like Bouillabaisse Marseillaise and Jaret d'âgneau braisé (braised lamb shank). If you're not in the mood for French cuisine, there is a diverse list of restaurants within walking distance —as this is midtown.
