To solidify this status, local cosmetic enhancement king Dr. Michael Salzhauer came up with an idea for the first-ever Plastic Surgery Fashion Show as the grand-opening event of Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery, his new five-story complex. His business had been booming for six years and it was time to expand, time to celebrate. Attendees were able to enjoy tasty hors d'oeuvres while studying before-and-after shots of many of his patients. Then, surgically enhanced women sauntered down a catwalk happily displaying their upgraded bodies. It certainly isn't new news that the economy is struggling, and the cosmetic enhancement business is affected by this downturn, so getting creative is the name of the game. If you want more business, increase your game. And the striking Dr. Salzhauer knows how to play: He's not your average surgeon, but someone who thinks outside that box. And to further prove the point, he's experienced great success with his one-of- kind nip/tuck show book, My Beautiful Mommy. The book was released more than a year ago as an illustrated guide for four- to seven-year-olds to help them understand what's happening when their mother goes under the knife. Sure, some people laughed and the critics scoffed, but mommies everywhere felt a sense of relief, because everyone knows that children aren't afraid to ask questions, and sometimes adults find it difficult to come up with the best answer. This book gets directly to the point: when mommy returns home from surgery all wrapped up in bandages. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), approximately 11.8 million cosmetic procedures take place in the United States alone each year. Roughly, $12.4 billion is spent on cosmetic procedures and $1.8 million on surgical cosmetic procedures. Breaking it down, 137% of the procedures are tummy tucks, 97% breast lifts, 76% thigh and upper arm lifts (after massive weight loss), 65% forehead lifts, 64% breast augmentations, and 14% are facelifts. Last fall, 6,000 doctors attended the Plastic Surgery 2008 annual scientific meeting of ASPS, in Chicago, Illinois.
