106 MIAMI LIVING "I'm using black, black, and black, with a mixture of jewel-toned brights (think turquoise), coral, and nude. And as for the print directions, they're leather and lace with a mixture of animal print classics with embellishments." The local designer, who has been in the swimwear-design business for a little less than 20 years, has consistently put on a good show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, which he describes as the best kind of a blur. "I do more than 100 interviews. I meet with buyers and editors. I have dinners with family and friends. And, in the middle of all the chaos, we have a big show," he said. "But it really has been one of the most rewarding opportunities of my life, to be here and give back to Miami in my own small way. I feel like a rock star, but also, I have a glow inside all week because I get to follow my dreams." From L.A. with love Coming back to show in town in July is L.A.-based designer Shay Todd. The celebrity-adored Todd tells Miami Living she is looking forward to presenting her new collection here because cannot get enough of "the confidence of the women of Miami Beach—they're daring and willing to take on any challenge." "The new collection is a journey to an exotic destination, a virtual fantasy land, traveling from one country to another with fluidity," she said. "You will find feminine silhouettes and sexy cuts in both muted tones and soft floral landscapes with statement colors like chartreuse, periwinkle, and fuchsia." She describes the collection as relaxed and comfortable, yet sophisticated and evocative of an eclectic gypsy aura. "These looks are meant to make you feel beautiful and confident when lounging by the pool, or jet-setting to an exotic locale," she said. "I was inspired by details of lingerie, like crochet, beading, ruffles, and handkerchief cuts." Unlike Carter, though, who shows both men's and women's looks, Todd designs exclusively for the ladies, although, she says, "You never know what's ahead." One way to find out is by attending Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week Swim. See you there. For more information about the event, and a complete schedule of shows, visit www.mbfashionweek.com/miami.
