SAO PAULO, BRAZIL SAMPA São Paulo or "Sampa" as its residents refer to it, is one of the 10 largest cities in the world –by some measures, the third largest – and the country's financial powerhouse. Although many tend to visit São Paulo on business, the city offers plenty of attractions, including an abundance of museums, cultural centers, theaters, and notable nightclubs and bars with a reputation for being the best on the continent. São Paulo is often compared to New York and Tokyo because of its strong economy and large population, which is made up of hundreds of distinct ethnic groups. This immense cultural melting pot has created a world- renowned culinary mecca. Look past the concrete skyscrapers and you'll discover a multitude of natural wonders. Praia do Sancho (Paradise Beach) in Ilhabela is a secluded, protected and aptly named beauty with pretty skies, azure oceans, and bright coral. Campos do Jordao is one of the country's highest settlements; its kitschy Alpine-style resort offers a splendid escape. Venture inland to capture the seemingly endless fields of pasture with grazing cattle, sugar cane and oranges, and discover "fazenda" houses, which were synonymous with coffee production and are considered legendary architecture typical of the region.
