On the northern tip of one of the world's best known tourist locations —Miami Beach's Ocean Drive – there's a hotel that stands out with incongruous distinction. Architecturally speaking, the Betsy-South Beach (#1440) lacks its neighbors' Art Deco finials, spires, ziggurats, portholes, and neon pinks. Designed in 1941 by L. Murray Dixon, the former Betsy Ross Hotel sports a Colonial-style four-column, bright white portico with 20-foot windows and plantation- style wood shutters overlooking Lummus Park and the Atlantic. But by the new millennium as much of Ocean Drive began to surge, the hotel looked bedraggled and undercapitalized.
