ARTS SCENE Living On Lyrics Dissecting the Grammatical Anatomy of Punk Rock Words by Matthew Weeks Born and raised next to electric blue waves and crisp granules of sand, I’m what people refer to as a rarity in the sunshine state: A true Floridian. My father taught me to surf at the age of nine and thus, purchased surf videos like most kids who collect baseball cards. As our collection grew, I began to notice each video was littered with punk rock tracks. Bands such as Pennywise and NOFX were auditory staples for Kelly Slater’s roundhouse cutbacks and Shane Dorian’s tube rides. Band Decade A few years later, I became addicted to the lyrical creativity and emotional freedoms that reside in the heart of punk rock music. My literary mind enjoyed exploring the various limericks and choral arrangements. What I appreciated most about punk rock was its brutal honesty. The beauty of this genre allows individuals to express their greatest joys and deepest fears. Love, anger, frustration and despair are just a few of the themes that glorify punk rock. Therefore, this article will dissect the grammatical anatomy of four different punk rock songs, as listed below:Through this exploration, I will establish a direct relationship between the applications of grammar with their punk rock counterparts and decade stereotypes.
