SPECIAL EVENT: FANTASY FEST Experience the fantastical world of Fantasy Fest 2010 Words by Marta A. Oppenheimer Every year, during the month of October, Key West paints the town red —blood red! Vampires, witches, pirates, ghosts, and goblins come out to play during Fantasy Fest. The theme for this year is Habitat for Insanity, a perfect excuse to go insane. From October 22 to October 31, Key West will transform businesses, homes, and hotels into visions of Halloween. From Haunted Mansions guarded by enormous gargoyles, Vampire Lairs displaying oversized bloody fangs, and the bling and shine of Hollywood, these establishments will not only delight visitors, but will compete for cash prices during the Reddy Ice Fantasy Façade Competition. There is even the chance to bump into Elvis, Marilyn, or Cher at the Celebrity Look-A-Like Contest. It is a weekend of creative competition. Design a phenomenal headdress and show it off at the 28th Annual Headdress Ball at the Southernmost Hotel on the Beach. The paradise-like, warm and sunny October weather of Key West is a great incentive to dress up in an elaborate, layered, masterpiece or hardly dress, in a sexy, minuscule ensemble. Either way, go for the winnings at Fogarty’s Red Party. All ten days are packed with adventures. Dance in the streets at Goombay, a celebration of Caribbean treats and island music at Bahama Village. Embrace the royal opportunity of selecting the King and Queen of Fantasy Fest. Attend the Royal Coronation Ball while supporting AIDS Help, Inc. Enter the Dungeon of Dark Secrets and Fetishes at your own risk! This is a naughty evening for couples of all sorts at Bourbon Bar Saloon, an opportunity to unleash hidden desires. Leather, latex, or plastic, the attire is up to the imagination. Or, do not leave much to the imagination, your choice. Encounters with Werewolves are as possible as those with Liza (with a Z) impersonators. This year’s shindig falls during the full moon. At Full Moon and Big’uns Sports Bar Lunar Lunancy Party get ready to howl and compete for the best “full moon.” This is not necessarily the celestial body orbiting the earth. MIAMI LIVING 33
