South Florida has experienced major environmental changes due to the rapid population and urbanization growth. In order to increase awareness and knowledge of environmental issues in South Florida, Citizens for a Better South Florida (CITIZENS) was established in 1988. Founded by Arsenio Milian, a Cuban-born, environmental-civil engineer, the non-profit environmental organization addresses a range of environmental issues in order to improve the quality of life for South Floridian's citizens. And here is how you can get involved with CITIZENS: URBAN GREENING & COMMUNITY FORESTRY This program focuses on educating adults and children on the importance of trees. It provides info and strategy on how to preserve, improve, and increase Miami-Dade's canopy, urban forests, and other natural resources. HABITAT RESTORATION & ECOSYSTEM STEWARDSHIP This program offers service-learning opportunities for volunteers of all ages. It focuses on the removal of exotic and invasive plants, reintroduce native and endangered plants, improve mangrove ecosystems, beach and coastal cleanups, and more. SCHOOL & UNIVERSITY GREENING AND OUTREACH PROGRAM This science-driven program provides education about urban forestry, water conservation, and general environmental issues in both English and Spanish for students in grades K-12, pre-K-12 after-schools, youth groups, colleges, universities, and any interested organizations. BUNGALOW NATIVE LANDSCAPE DEMONSTRATION GARDEN This program educates participants on native plants, trees, gardening, and Florida-friendly landscaping, including drip irrigation systems, no lawn practices, composting bins, and other practices that are beneficial to the environment.
