Heading the other direction from Miami, the extensive waterways of the Everglades provide habitat for an incredible diversity of birds: herons, egrets, storks, cranes, and gallinules all breed within a short drive from downtown Miami. Many species can be found in Miami's local parks and natural areas, such as the rich mangrove habitatat Vizcaya. My favorite spot to observe south Florida's rich bird life is the Anhinga Trail in the Everglades, just southwest of Homestead. If you leave Miami early enough, and arrive at the trail at dawn, you can meander the board walk slowly, passing by sleepy alligators, gorgeous Purple Gallinules, and a half-dozen species of herons and egrets. Endangered Snail Kites can sometimes be seen gliding low over the marsh, looking for apple snails to feed on. Barred Owls nest in the woods nearby, and can often be seen hunting snakes right around the parking lot . Tricolored Heron Sandhill crane preening
