The National Hotel Art Deco Elegance Words by Charles Greenfield Miami Beach famously distinguishes itself by a dazzling display of decades-old Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive. With their Crayola-bright facades, jaunty decorations, and gaudy neon, they can obscure the fact that a hotel like The National, 1677 Collins Avenue, just north of Lincoln Road, more accurately reflects the Art Moderne influence of the city's few taller original streamlined and geometric-designed resorts. Architect Roy France (Saxony, Casablanca) designed the 14-story, iconic structure in 1939 with a silver dome atop a cupola, clean, flowing rectangular lines, and a spectacular, perpendicular, 205-foot infinity-edge swimming pool —the longest on Miami Beach. His motto for the hotels was: "Let in the air and sun. That's what people come to Florida for!"
