A Night in Alappuzha A true wanderer knows the feeling of life on the road. No alarms, no schedules. Pure freedom with new eyes for adventure. A Night in Alappuzha evokes the wonder of a far off journey… to your home. Oaxaca Fever Oaxaca City is a stunning colonial town tucked in the mountains of the Sierra Madres de Oaxaca. This old city has the charm of a little village mixed with the hustle and bustle of a city. Oaxaca was originally the territory of the Zapotec people. The strength of Zapotecas runs deep in their native language, culture, and traditions. Hand looming and nature dying are few Zapotec traditions. Gorgeous hand loomed rugs are made on traditional wooden looms. Each strand of wool is precisely inspected to make sure it has great quality of both strength and color density. The dying process is done with two main ingredients; indigo and cochineal. Indigo is used to create the cooler colors; blue and green hues. Cochineal is used to create the warm colors; red, orange, yellow. It is also manipulated to create purple, but only the super knowledgeable have mastered this color. Cochineal is derived from a parasite on the local nopal {cactus}. The bug is simply brushed off the cacti and dried out. This creates a fine red powder that is mixed with a base or an acid to create an array of colors. Fabric dying is an art that has been handed down from generations to generations. Our journey to finding the perfect rugs started and ended in Oaxaca. We found more than we ever imagined and more than we could carry.
