THE HISTORY & COURSE The Tournament Players Championship officially began in 1974 and was played at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta , Georgia . The first champion of the event was golf legend Jack Nicklaus . Former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman was the driving force behind the construction of THE PL AYERS Stadium Course , which has been home to THE PL AYERS since 1982 . Course creation relied on unique design concept s , including the permanence of the location as well as the intention of having the course and surrounding areas be built with spectators in mind . The Stadium Course was developed to elevate the on -site experience for fans by providing extraordinary views of golf for all attendees . THE PLAYERS Stadium Course is the purest test in golf.
