On Crashing, you were listening to Joel Osteen in your car, do you listen to him for inspiration/ motivation? "I did. Before my divorce," he laughs. "That's a good catch. I was so happy that he let us do that. I had to tell him —I wrote him an email. I was like, 'We're not making fun of you.' I don't think I put it this plainly, 'cause I didn't want it to sound like I don't like him now. I do like him now, but I don't really listen to him much anymore —when I was young, I did. What we were trying to show in the show was, his sort of smiley-everything's-going-to-be-OK thing is wonderful when things are going OK. And then, if your wife leaves you, it stops making sense. Just for a time. Maybe you can come back to it later, but that was based on a real experience. I remember I was like, 'Well, Joel Osteen always puts me in a good mood, so I put it on and he might as well have been speaking Vietnamese 'cause I was just like, this doesn't make any sense, 'cause I was depressed. He's like, 'It's going to be fine.' And I was like, 'I don't believe you.'" Photo credit: Craig Blankenhorn/HBO
