MIAMI LIVING 79 EVENTS GUIDE This is the most exciting time of the year to be in Miami, so as Madonna sang earlier this season, "Let's get it started, no more hesitation / "'Cause everybody wants to party with…" us. Up first is the 26 th Miami Book Fair International (MBFI). Scheduled for Nov. 8-15, the event is the premier program of the Florida Center for Literary Arts at Miami-Dade College. (The always-popular street fair is set for Nov. 13-15 in Downtown Miami.) Year after year, it attracts hundreds of thousands of book lovers who attend readings and discussions with prize-winning, best-selling, and emerging authors from the United States and around the world. Alina Interián, executive director of the Florida Center for Literary Arts and a member of the MBFI family for 20 years, first joined the fair as director in 1989. "I always knew we had a particular role in Miami," she said. "I've seen the tremendous response from the community and the media, and was encouraged every time we added a new component. I always knew we'd be around today." Among the talent they have lined up for 2009 are former Vice President Al Gore (Our Choice), Liz Balmaseda, Jaime Bayli, Po Bronson, Susie Essman, and Les Standiford, among others. But rules are meant to be broken, especially when there is a party involved. This year marks the silver anniversary jubilee of one of the GLBT community's most enduring fundraisers in Miami, the White Party. Scheduled for Nov. 25-30, the world's oldest and largest HIV/AIDS Fundraiser turns 25-years-old. Its signature event on Nov. 28, featuring DJ Tony Moran, promises to be the event of the season, natch, with thousands of guests attending the most fabulous soirée on the weekend's lineup at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Other popular events that are sure to bring out the boys and girls are the Heatwave Pool Party at The National Hotel on Nov. 28, and Nov. 29's popular Muscle Beach Party, featuring Chris Cox and Oren Nizri on the deck. For more information, visit www.whiteparty.org. Let's get it Art-ed The end of the year brings about a heckuva lot to do, beginning with Art Miami Dec. 2- 6. The Magic City's original and most enduring art fair is almost legal this year, marking its 20 th anniversary. "Miami's culture and community has helped shape this fair into an integral part of the international contemporary art world," said Nick Korniloff, the fair's director. "We are confident that the depth and quality of the art works exhibited will match the current desires of those who attend and will make Art Miami 2009 another 'can't-miss' for all curators, collectors, and fairgoers alike." The 20th edition of Art Miami will feature a wide range of special exhibitions, including large outdoor sculpture from world-renowned artist Tony Cragg, a series of museum- quality video installations, as well as select offerings from private and public collections. For more information, visit www.art-miami.com. Meanwhile, Art Basel Miami Beach is set for Dec. 3-6. South Beach is turned into an art aficionado's wettest dream. Basel's eighth edition features more than 250 leading galleries from all around the world. As usual, special sectors will be devoted to more recent artworks, curated exhibits, performances, and art in public spaces, like Art Positions, which will be located in the center of Basel's longtime home, the Miami Beach Convention Center, this year. The brand new Oceanfront exhibition environment will host a daily program including the Art Basel Conversations, Art Perform, Art Video and Art Film. And the Basel fan favorite, Art Perform, will feature an intensified program of longer performances by rising international artists. The program will take place on Dec. 3 and Dec. 5. Also on schedule are FIU's 23 rd Annual Festival of the Trees, the university's 6 th Masters' Mystery Art Show, and the Frost Art Museum's Annual Breakfast in the Park with Michele Oka Doner on Dec. 6. Opening on Dec. 4 is "Kitchen Dreams" – Works in Glass by Ricky Bernstein at the Myrna and Sheldon Palley Pavilion for Contemporary Glass and Studio Arts at the Lowe Art Museum in Miami.
