MIAMI LIVING 103 "A third-party company [had it] and I didn't have a lot of creative control," she said. "So when it came time to start another one last year, [Josh] encouraged me to do it on my own. And in continuing that conversation, it made sense for us to do it together. We have a very similar taste in style and clothing and designers." So the Beeches decided to merge his "punk rock London vibe" and her "California rock 'n' roll" sensibilities into one aesthetic stream on what became the multimedia TwoHalvesBlog.com. She already had begun incorporating into his streetwear company the designs that she'd been making "for fun," so they decided to "put some money" into her original creations and get them manufactured professionally in downtown L.A. Pleased with the results, the couple closed the chapter on his company, rebranded, and relaunched as Two Halves. At TwoHalvesBlog.com, the two not only sell their wares but also share theirs likes, be they musical, sartorial, or otherwise. For instance, we learn that they were fond of rose ave., the collaboration that Pink and Dallas Green released as You+Me earlier this fall. In a clever post about shoes, Beech posited that, yes, "Dudes Creep Harder Than Chicks." And she expressed her melancholia for life in Toronto at the beginning of November, when she posted a nostalgia- tinged short essay about how she missed seeing the autumn leaves turn and fall back home, yet how "very much okay" she is with SoCal winters. Building an authentic brand But back to the jewelry, dahlings. Two Halves started as a handful of pieces that gave way to a full collection and to T-shirt designs for men and women. The plan, Grimes- Beech said, is to expand into hoodies and denim as well. Now, while the name Two Halves is a romantic nod to the Beeches' relationship (each is a half of one heart – get it!), the recent samples we saw belied an edge that is undeniably strong, surprisingly subtle, and stylishly wearable. The unisex pieces – think necklaces, rings, earrings, ear cuffs, and bangles – are gold- and silver-plated brass. "We are going to start doing a couple of pieces in sterling silver," she said. "But we wanted to start with an affordable price point and a high-quality level. The pieces are great. They have such great weight to them. They just feel rich, not hollow or cheap like a lot of the other brands that are out there. And our margins are very small because you just wanna be fair to the consumer." As an avid shopper, this was paramount to the actr…pardon us, to the designer, which is why a Two Halves gold-plated Charming Warrior necklace retails for $70 and a pair of silver-plated Charmer studs goes for $45. So what's next? Is Grimes-Beech the next Blake Lively or Gwyneth Paltrow? Like, do we have us a new actress-cum-brand on our hands, especially since she is taking a break from her day job? "I started acting when I was 13, so now, at 25, I definitely feel differently about it. By the time 90210 was ending, I realized some things about the industry that are a big part of the industry but that I'm not interested in at all," she said of her change in career paths. "I thought if that was the case, that I wanted to pursue things that I'd been passionate about since I was a kid but I had kinda forgotten because the acting thing took off for me." For Grimes-Beech, Two Halves represents an authentic move into a new arena in which she can star – well, happily co-star with her husband – and call the shots while being herself.
