Interview by Markin Abras Photos courtesy of Hubert Hurkacz Hubert Hurkacz, the 2021 Miami Open champion, sat down with Miami Living Magazine to share updates on his game, personal life, and what fans can expect from him this season. Miami Living: What’s something about your game that’s changed the most since a year ago? Anything fans might be surprised to see? Hubert Hurkacz: Since Miami last year, everything has changed—the clothing, rackets, and coaching team! So, there will definitely be a new me in Miami this year, and I’m looking forward to it. It will be very exciting to work with Nicolas Massu and Ivan Lendl, and I hope to see some positive changes out there. Miami Living: Over the past year, what’s a moment that made you step back and say, “Wow, I’m really proud of that”? Hurkacz: Well, can we go a few years back (laughs)? Because actually, I had a lot of experiences to learn from last year—dealing with injury, making a comeback, and everything we’ve done to return. It was a challenging year from that perspective. Every day, we are pushing hard to come back as soon as possible. And resilience is key to learning. Miami Living: You split your time between Poland and Monaco. What makes each place feel like home? Hurkacz: I’m from Poland, and I love being there. My family is there, and it’s so nice to come back to my roots, see my entire family, and spend time with them. I also live in Monaco, which is amazing. Everything is so convenient, and I have so many friends there, which makes it feel like a home away from Poland. Miami Living: You actually got to sleep in your own bed more than usual this year—how did that feel? Hurkacz: I actually have two beds—one in Poland and another in Monaco. I ended up sleeping in my own bed a lot because I was injured for a big part of the year—about two and a half months. Miami Living: Outside of tennis, what’s been one of your most unforgettable experiences lately? Hurkacz: I saw the WRC Monte-Carlo, which was really amazing. It was such a fun experience to be up close and see those guys driving incredibly fast in such narrow and difficult conditions—with rain, snow, and ice.
