I had the pleasure of sitting down with actress-producer- writer Tika Sumpter in late February. This beautiful, talented, driven woman is making things happen and we are beyond impressed with her. Our June/July 2020 cover star spoke with me about her new endeavors (SugaBerry.com and The Suga podcast via Stitcher), acting, producing, her new hit sitcom, Mixed-ish... "It's part of this really cool universe, which not only tells something funny, but is also socially impactful --you learn something, but without being beat over the head. I'm just grateful to be part of this planet, of the -ish universe," says Tika. Mixed-ish has become a favorite TV series of mine; I can't wait for it to return for season two. I would like to also address what is currently going on in the world. Honestly, it's challenging to find the right words when the world is experiencing so much pain, disappointment, and uncertainty this year. First, COVID-19 wrecked havoc by inciting worldwide fear for our health/well-being, it produced over 100,000 deaths in the U.S., left over 30 millon people (in the U.S. alone) unemployed (according to The Wall Street Journal), and significantly hurt our economy. Recently, we've been reminded that we must continue our uphill battle against social injustices, racism, and police brutality after watching George Floyd die while in the custody of law enforcement and not seeing immediate repercussions. This horrible injustice has incited peaceful protests, looting, violence, and a number of more uncalled for deaths. The injustice, violence, and division has been heartbreaking to me. We need to make a change now. We need to be just, compassionate, and take action. We need to stand together and fight for what is right. I hope that we will all work together to fix the deeply sad state our world is in and that we will learn to live peacefully, respectfully, and harmoniously together. Please spread love and kindness.
