THE SETTING Just over a 3-hour flight from Miami International Airpor t, St. Kit ts and Nevis are two picturesque islands in the eastern Caribbean featuring distinctive volcanic mountains, pristine beaches, sweeping vistas, and one of the richest tropical forests in the Caribbean. Over 203 bird species are present in the islands, including the Magnificent Frigatebird, Caribbean Mar tin, Bananaquit, Black-faced Grassquit and the Lesser Antillean Bullfinch. The islands are also home to the green ver vet monkey, presumed to have been brought over by the French in the 17th centur y and of which there are thousands free-roaming on the islands today. St Kit ts spans over 65 square miles and is home to about 55,000 people, warmly referred to as Kit tisians, with a quar ter of the total living in the capital city: Basseterre. Its smaller sister island Nevis stands at just 36 square miles with a population of about 11,500 people, or Nevisians. The islands are separated by a two-mile channel called "The Narrows", accessible by ferr y. The ride between St. Kit ts and Nevis takes about 15 minutes and provides stunning views of both islands.
