Though Rafael has been in the industry for quite a while, each new role presents its share of challenges. "I don't think I've felt too much out of my comfort zone, but I have been challenged by every character in one way or another. My first job working in English…, my first Hollywood job [Empire], I was working with people that I admired most of my life. When I was in When We Ride, with an incredible cast, and I had to play a real-life person that had died in the 80s, during the AIDS epidemic, storytelling-wise, it was super important. It felt like a huge responsibility. This was the job where I really couldn't fuck it up. It wasn't about me or my career, it was about the story being told and his life. Each role should be challenging in a fulfilling way." In addition to acting, he'd like to shadow a director and do a film. "I would love to write. I have ideas for pilots and movies, but I haven't really sat down to finish them yet. I've been so focused on acting that all of my creativity has been going to that and eventually, I would like to expand that creativity. For me, I wanted to focus on my acting. I was perfecting my craft and now I'm ready to grow." When he isn't filming, he enjoys food, wine, traveling, and nature. "I'm a very outdoorsy person. I love hiking. I love going to art museums --the last one I just went to was actually the Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid. And human connection --there's nothing like that bond with another person."
