Praia do Sancho FUN FACTS Metropolitan São Paulo is 6.5 times the size of New York with 19 million inhabitants, making it the largest city in both Americas and the whole Southern hemisphere. The inhabitants of São Paulo are called Paulistas. São Paulo has helicopter taxi service; its civil fleet is the biggest in the world. São Paulo lies on a hilly plateau some 2,700 feet (820 m) above sea level. Temperatures are a little milder than those of the lower areas, with the average temperature ranging between 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. The city has the third-largest concentration of skyscrapers in the world after New York and Hong Kong. The largest building in São Paulo (and in all Brazil) is the Mirante do Vale, which is 170 meters in height and opened in 1960. The famous race driver Ayrton Senna was born in São Paulo. The Japanese community of São Paulo is the largest settlement of Japanese outside of Japan. São Paulo has the highest GDP of Brazil and South America and ranks 10th in the world.
