The 19th Annual Miami Edition of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival will outshine all other years with new exciting venues, great films, and amazing people from April 21-30, 2017. Our mission is to inspire, entertain, and educate the public, encourage a sense of community through international and culturally diverse film that offer historical and contemporary perspectives on the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experience. Where we believe MiFo outshines is in encouraging a sense of community by answering a question: Why do people go to the movies? Which is not the same as why we watch movies. We watch movies because we are interested in the story it wants to tell and how it is being told. But why we go to movies is a different answer. We go to movies because of people. Even someone going to the movies by themselves is going there to watch it with people: to laugh with them, cry with them, jump in their seats with them, take in the whole spectacle of the film with them. When you go with others, you inevitably talk about it. Sometimes you may have groups of friends you watch certain types of movies with, and members of that group bring others and you meet new people. In the end, you go to the movies to be with people. Events during the festival range from the Opening Night Film & Party at the historic Scottish Rite Temple in Miami on NW 3rd Street and the Miami River on Friday, April 21 to our Awards Brunch at the iconic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables on Sunday, April 30. In between we will be having our Women's Spotlight Party, Centerpiece Party, High Heel Party, and Closing Party all on fabulous Miami Beach. Besides all our traditional events, we have formed partnerships with area restaurants to encourage dinner and a movie nights. We're also waiting to find out what Celebrity Cruises will do this year? Last year, they wowed our members with their unbelievable Taste-of-Film; this year they are planning something new and more special. And the films? Once again, the Miami Edition starts the LGBT film festival season with an outstanding program that continues to shine year after year. Our Made-in-Miami film this year, A Change of Heart, is thanks to Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Jim Belushi, Virginia Madsen, William Levy, and director Kenny Ortega, the Estefans produced this light-hearted comedy throughout South Florida. You discover a face and experience the plight of DREAMers through the charismatic Moises Serrano and his story in the incredible documentary Forbidden: Undocumented and Queer in Rural America. Award-winning drama Hate Crime is one of our proudest gets for the 19th Annual Miami Edition of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival. Parents struggle with the aftermath of their son's rash decision against the son of another set of parents, and what happens when these parents meet. LGBT film has come a long way from the coming-out- and HIV/AIDS-related stories that once dominated. Today, the LGBT films are diverse and offer a story for every taste. Whether you're a part of the LGBT community or an ally, the 19th Annual Miami Edition of the MiFo LGBT Film Festival has a story for you to experience with others—whether they're other patrons or friends and family that you invite. If you've experienced the festival in the past, we invite you back. If you have just discovered us, we invite you to see how we truly outshine. For more information, visit www.MiFoFilm.com. ML
