Where did the inspiration for the 2016 Fall/ Winter collection come from? Anne Fontaine: The 2016 Fall/Winter collection is based on three strong themes: Retro-Graphic, Dark Romanticism, and I also played into the androgynous card through timeless, resolutely modern masculine- feminine looks. I really enjoy creating clothing for a complete wardrobe. Versatility and transparency are at the heart of the collection. Collars and sleeves are detachable to dress up or dress down. Custom created motifs are adopted in various techniques and forms. Is there a specific item you consider an essential in any women's closet? AF: The white shirt of course, it is my signature. The white shirt is like a white painting with endless possibilities. There is nothing sexier than a woman wearing a white shirt. It is versatile enough to work across all occasions, from work to evening. What is the process behind putting an entire collection together? AF: It is quite a long process. First I define the themes, then find and design the fabrics. I spend a lot of time to draw the designs for laces, embroideries, jacquards, and prints. Then I play with the fabric on my body and mannequins, and I make the sketches. Or I do the sketches directly and find the fabrics after. Then comes prototypes and the most difficult: choose the designs that will be kept for the collection! The color palette is lovely! Is there a reason why you decided to focus on black and white? AF: White was always my core color, because of my white shirts and the intemporality. Now black has a large place in my collections. It is always chic and elegant. I agree with you, colors are lovely. Now, I also introduce colors and every season I make a selection of my season's favorites. It's the silhouette's final touch! Have you worked with Sassoon in the past? AF: Yes, I have. I love the team. I myself have very long hair and know how important it is to have the right treatment. What drove you to have the Sassoon team style your fashion show? AF: I needed a professional team to make my models be at their best, and Sassoon is for sure the best choice. This one might be tough, but which is your favorite outfit, and why? AF: I love wearing a white shirt with a large masculine pant and heels! Or for a more casual style, the white shirt with a black legging, and platform brogues. Never wrong, simple and elegant! Is there a specific fabric that we see throughout the entire collection? AF: I made some styles in velvet this season. You can find it on the "Andy" leggings, the "Anja" vest or the "Arden" jacket. It is a great fabric I love to work with as it is soft and very elegant. Of course, white poplin and many laces. What were you aiming to accomplish with this collection? And how does it differentiate from the other collections you have? AF: I especially loved to play with different fabrics and techniques of embroidery, applique, devoré, and macramé. For this FW2016 collection, I wanted to bring elegance with a kind of darkness giving a glamorous touch to all of the pieces.
