TRAVEL 132 MIAMI LIVING Then you begin hiking down the mountain and into a warmer climate. It's time for lunch, and although you've been at it for half a day, the way down's better – a good thing 'cause you won't rest until the evening, until you get to the campsite at Challhuay. Day 3 feels like the longest because it's usually the warmest. The road on Day 3 borders the jungle and you feel it, but by mid-afternoon, if everything goes accord- ing to plan, you can hop on a train to Aguas Calientes, the precursor stop to your visit to Machu Picchu. Taking on the Salkantay trek, people will tell ya, is not for the faint of heart. Sure, it's hard – but it's not that hard and, sure, if given the chance, you may take a little shortcut (guilty…let's not talk about it!). But it is a stunning walk, alright. ML Day 2 will bring about more drastic changes as you hike the Salkantay (Quechua for "Savage Mountain") up to 4,650 m.a.s.l. (i.e., 12,255 feet above sea level). You marvel at the grandiosity of the mountain and of the glacier lake that sits virtually undisturbed near it. Most of all, you marvel at having made it up. Day 2 Day 3 To book your passage, contact Jorge Quispe at Zehos Tours in Lima, at 011-511-332-0609. The tour should run you about $350 per person, not including airfare(s), natch, or your stay in Cuzco.
