It's that time of year again, when the snow starts to melt and fashion editors, bloggers, and celebrities jet-set to the major cities of the world. This means, we get to watch as flowers start to bloom and our favorite designers show off their lighter fabrics, brighter colors, and shorter hemlines. Ultimately, fashion week is like the fashionista's Groundhog Day. Getting to see what is just around the corner for trends, signals the return of spring and summer. And to be honest, we couldn't be more excited about it if we tried. That 70s Show The seventies are back and better than ever. A few designers caught disco fever and never looked back. Everything from wide-legged trousers to shimmering tops for a night out boogied and hustled down the runway. Okay, not literally, but even those who didn't opt for the obvious chose to pay homage to the disco era. Consider Celine's take on the white tuxedo jacket or the bohemian maxi dresses from Claire Waight Keller for Chloe. Why love this new trend? Because just like the first time around, this is all about the attitude when wearing it —plus, if nothing else, the high-waisted wide-legged trousers will look great with the crop tops that you binge- bought last year. Spring Fling All things feminine and romantic are a huge trend for spring and summer. Unlike last spring though, things are taking a decidedly less floral turn. Designer main staples like Valentino, Dior, and Louis Vuitton took a more ethereal approach to feminine summer frocks. Pure white and sheer laces were the order of the day, while the romantic lines for sunset to sunrise had a hint of prima ballerina to them. What makes this trend so fun for the upcoming season is that they give you the opportunity to play with light and movement. The sheerness of some fabrics are great to balance the feminine and the sensual, while the movement of the fabrics allow for the prettiest silhouettes. It might all be a very modern twist on Black Swan and A Room With A View, but who doesn't like to look a bit like a heroine from a classic novel? Dude Looks Like A Lady Every so often fashion goes androgynous, which leads to the masculine gone feminine and visa versa. The fun begins with asymmetrical suits, this time around, from Anthony Vaccarello. Then menswear suit jackets took a street-style turn with Sonia Rykiel, and of course the triumphant return of John Galliano for Maison Martin Margiela meant a new take on feminine menswear. Of course, this trend is not simply about the cut of a suit, there was more of a menswear nod with the emerging jumpsuit trend. Think Top Gun meets Rosie the Riveter. The jumpsuits from Emilio Pucci, Ralph Lauren and Celine are more sophisticated takes on industrial jumpsuits than perhaps you have seen through off the rack lines within the last year. Predictably, the nautical element for spring did show up, but took a more masculine line on the runways. Lanvin showed a classic oversized coat with nautical detailing that is perfect for spring layering, while Marc Jacobs went clearly masculine with his version of a sailor's uniform. Imagine if you mastered pairing this trend with the ballerina-inspired eveningwear? Ultimately, the main trends for the upcoming season indicate a level of adventure to be had with the personal wardrobe. The spring and summer collections seem to be less about the standard, and more about the new and unexpected. Try using these trend pieces as a means to shake up your typical warm weather uniform. Regardless of how much you do or don't, jump on this season's trend bandwagon; at least we all know one thing – spring is here!
