Whereas once upon a time the pioneers headed west in search of fortune, Jay's initial pursuit was decidedly less let's strike it big and more let's have a fun time. It was 1998, a time before the Housewives, reality stars, and socialites took over. Just like any other young, fresh arrival in the City of Angels, Jay got himself a seemingly whatever job manning a desk at a West Hollywood fitness studio. intensity. What must one do to burn 1,000 calories? Derek DeGrazio: The key is simple: Honest effort, honest results. Whatever you put into the workout, you will get back. If you work hard and at your best, you will be rewarded with quick and amazing results. ML: James, I know you and your background, so tell the rest of us why you decided to come back to Miami and get into the fitness game. James Provencher, Barry's Bootcamp Miami Beach co-owner Whitney Kroenke, and Derek DeGrazio Little did he know he would become engrossed by the vibe of the work-out set. He had found his bliss, and within a year, Jay had become the go-to guy at the studio thanks to his innovative drill sergeantmeets-party-time-promoter approach to breaking a good sweat. Jay's shtick became Barry's Bootcamp, a 1,000-calorie-burn per hour worldwide workout phenomenon that's now opening in Miami (locations include WeHo, Chelsea and Tribeca, and Nashville, as well as outposts in Norway and the U.K.). Counted among a growing number of Happy Campers are celebrities such as Katie Holmes, Jake "The Gyllen-yum" Gyllenhaal, Kim Kardashian, Stacy Keibler, Justin Timberlake, and Carrie Underwood. All have taken classes that combine intervals of intense cardio and strength training while targeting specific areas each day of the week. Former 305 luxury-travel PR specialist James Provencher – a friend, in the interest of full disclosure – and trainer Derek DeGrazio, the man pop fans may thank for Britney Spears' hot comeback bod, have partnered to bring the concept to the Magic City. The Barry's in Miami Beach is a nearly 4,000square-foot Ronnie Jones-designed fluidly laid out studio that features a Fuel Bar and a charming little retail area in the lobby. Here, we let James and Derek answer five key questions about the so-called "Best Workout in the World." Miami Living: Let's start with an easy one: Who is Barry and why should we try his bootcamp? James Provencher: Barry [Jay] is a longtime friend. He is the brainchild behind this indoor bootcamp concept and how our curriculum is structured to this day. He took something that most people despise – exercising – and turned it into blocks of extremely effective one-hour classes of hard work and hard fun. Barry is the whole reason why any of us got interested in the company. People should try Barry's Bootcamp because it works. Plain and simple. I could sit here and try to sell it to you for days, but I'd prefer to just have people try a class and see for themselves. That is how I got sold on the workout. ML: I understand the key ingredient in a Barry's Bootcamp workout is 38 MIAMI LIVING JP: I have always been interested in health and fitness. Being a former overweight kid, I am someone that consistently has to diet and work out to this day. Living in L.A. introduced me to a whole new world of health and fitness, and really taught me how to incorporate that into most aspects of my daily life. Once I met Derek and Whitney [Kroenke, co-owner of Barry's Bootcamp Miami Beach] and we all started to show interest in opening our own studio, Miami Beach was the first place we thought of. This is a tcommunity that prides itself on being sexy, beach-ready, and fit. The only thing missing was an actual Barry's Bootcamp studio...and that is where we come in. ML: How about you, Derek – how long have you been training, and what's your go-to advice for a client who's looking to get back in killer shape or push past a plateau situation? DD: I've been training for seven years at Barry's. The best thing to do is show up. If you show up consistently and commit to the workout, our instructors will take care of the rest. ML: Tell us what is going to set your studio apart from all the other places in Miami. DD: I've been an athlete my entire life. I've been through every type of practice and workout out there. I was hooked on Barry's after my first class. There is nothing like it. It's the most efficient and effective workout you will get in an hour. You'll leave [us] with a smile on your face, a new body, and amazing friends. JP: We have a reputation for having The Best Workout in the World. We have a fully custom-designed studio that offers hard workouts and luxury in one experience. We are a lifestyle…a community, not just your daily gym. We want you to come in and truly feel like you are part of the Barry's family. Well, there you have it, folks. Now let's get sweatin'. Barry's Bootcamp Miami Beach is located at 1835 Purdy Ave. in Miami Beach. Individual classes start at $28, with packages for as low as $23 a pop.
