While many travelers come to Lake Como for its grand villas and celebrity appeal, fewer discover the stories that shaped the lake itself. In the village of Pianello del Lario, the Museo Barca Lariana offers one of Italy’s most fascinating cultural experiences, preserving centuries of nautical history while inviting visitors to experience Lake Como through its traditions, landscapes, and historic homes. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century silk mill, the museum is home to one of Europe’s most important collections dedicated to inland navigation and Italian boating heritage. Spanning approximately 2,500 square meters, with an additional 2,000 square meters of lakeside parkland, it houses more than 400 historic boats, over 300 vintage engines, thousands of artifacts, an extensive archive of photographs and technical documents, and a specialized library containing more than 2,500 publications. Among the remarkable vessels in the collection are the world’s oldest surviving gondola with its traditional felze cabin; the Laura I° Abbate, the first boat to exceed 200 km/h; a three-point hydroplane masterpiece conceived by visionary boatbuilder Guido Abbate; the Olympic gold medal-winning sailing yacht Merope; the elegant English Cisko-Yu Thames A-Rater; the pioneering steam vessel Balilla; and the Freccia dei Gerani, the only surviving Rodrigues RHS70 hydrofoil. More than a collection of beautifully restored boats, the museum tells the story of Italy through navigation, showing how commerce, innovation, sport, craftsmanship, and everyday life evolved from Roman times to the present. Interactive exhibits, workshops, and guided tours make the collection accessible to visitors of all ages, while newer galleries dedicated to Riva motorboats and Venetian gondolas add further depth. The museum also features a lakeside bistro, panoramic terraces, and outdoor event spaces. A highlight of the museum’s cultural program is Le Barche Raccontano (“The Boats Tell Stories”), a major project supported by Fondazione Cariplo exploring the connections
