MIAMI MOMENTS Wang’s relationship with Miami runs deep. She has made several notable appearances with the New World Symphony under the guidance of Michael Tilson Thomas. As co-founder and former Artistic Director of the New World Symphony, Thomas spent over three decades cultivating an institution known for bold programming, high-caliber performances, and mentorship of emerging talent—including Wang herself. Wang first opened the symphony’s season in Miami in October 2013, performing Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. She returned for another season opener in October 2017 and appeared again in April 2019 for an alumni concert at the New World Center. Each performance reinforced her standing as one of the world’s leading pianists. Their collaboration stretches far beyond Miami. From early in her career, Tilson Thomas served as a mentor and advocate, guiding Wang as she performed with both the San Francisco Symphony and the New World Symphony, as well as in major concert halls around the globe. Wang has often spoken of her deep gratitude for his guidance and the profound influence he has had on her musical development. In recent years, Michael Tilson Thomas has faced serious health challenges. Diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer (glioblastoma) in August 2021, he revealed in February 2025 that the tumor had returned. While continuing treatment at UCSF, he has acknowledged the uncertain prognosis. He plans to conclude his conducting career after final engagements with the New World Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony for his 80th birthday, stepping into a more limited or emeritus role.
