Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits at the end of the Oslofjord and serves as the country’s political and cultural center. It is Norway’s largest city and a key hub for business, government, and the arts, combining vibrant city life with easy access to nature, a rich cultural scene, and plenty of waterfront areas to explore. The city dates back over a thousand years and was originally founded around 1040 AD. It was called Christiania for several centuries before returning to its original name, Oslo, in 1925. Throughout its history, Oslo has been shaped by trade, war, and political change. One important site is Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle that has protected the city for centuries. The Viking Ship Museum also draws attention, displaying well-preserved ships and artifacts from Norway’s Viking past. Some of Oslo’s key attractions I suggest include the Oslo Opera House, known for its distinctive design and public roof that visitors can walk on. Vigeland Sculpture Park, with hundreds of sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland, offers insight into human emotions and life stages. The Nobel Peace Center highlights the city’s connection to the Nobel Peace Prize and Norway’s role in international diplomacy. Nature is never far in Oslo. The Oslofjord provides opportunities for boat trips and waterfront walks, while nearby forests and hills offer trails for hiking and skiing. Holmenkollen Ski Jump is both a sports venue and a lookout point with views over the city and fjord. Outdoor activities like skiing in winter and hiking in summer are popular for locals and tourists alike. Oslo is known for its commitment to sustainability, investing in clean public transport, cycling infrastructure, and renewable energy to reduce emissions and protect nature. These efforts help Oslo rank high in global happiness and quality of life, making it a great place to visit and live. Arvid Malde, Unsplash
