A Brief History Founded in the early 18th century, San José began as a small village with no formal government, which made it unique among Latin American capitals. It wasn’t until 1823 that it officially became the capital of Costa Rica, chosen for its central location. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city grew rapidly, fueled by the coffee boom that brought wealth and European influence, especially in its architecture and arts. Today, San José stands as a testament to Costa Rica’s democratic legacy, artistic traditions, and dynamic modernization.
