Yet Kidman’s dynamic presence isn’t confined to the runway. She is also captivating audiences on the big screen with her standout performance in the erotic thriller Babygirl. Following her fashion success, Kidman transitions effortlessly into this bold new role, marking one of her most explicit performances to date. In a chat with Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman, she opens up about her role in Babygirl and her fearless approach to exploring complex characters. Babygirl was the film everyone was talking about at the Venice Film Festival and continues to make waves in 2025. The erotic thriller received a seven-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the Sala Grande in Italy. Kidman stars alongside Antonio Banderas, Harris Dickinson, and Sophie Wilde. She plays Romy, a CEO who seems to have it all: success, two spirited daughters, and a devoted husband [Banderas] who adores her by day and makes tender love to her at night. But is that the kind of sex she really wants? Written and directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl opens with Kidman faking an orgasm. As soon as her husband finishes and falls asleep, Romy darts into another room, pulls up some S&M porn on her laptop and brings herself to a real climax. She then puts her life’s work on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much-younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. In Italy, director Reijn said: ‘I was delighted to be able to make a film about feminine desire, but it’s also about an existential crisis, it has many layers’. Halina also noted that women’s relationships with their bodies was ‘exactly why’ she wanted to make this movie and show that ‘the huge orgasm gap still exists,’ she said, quipping, ‘Take note, men.’ Meanwhile, Nicole talked about the freeing experience she had making the film and how she approached her role with ‘complete abandon’. She also talked about working with an intimacy coordinator, how safe she felt on set for her sex scenes with both Banderas and Dickinson and more. So Nicole, let’s talk about sex [laughs]. What kind of conversations did you have when you were preparing for this role, and what do you hope audiences discuss about what is allowed, or what our desires should be able to allow us to do? Nicole Kidman: Well, that’s a lot of questions in there. Yeah, I think this film is obviously, yes, it’s about sex, it’s about desire, it’s about your inner thoughts. It’s about secrets. It’s about marriage. It’s about truth, power, consent. So, language for sex, it’s so complicated to answer, because this is one woman’s story, and this is, I hope, a very liberating story. It’s told by a woman through her gaze. It’s Halina’s [Reijn] script, she wrote it, she directs it. And that’s, to me, what made it so unique, was that suddenly I was going to be in the hands of a woman with this material. And it was very, very deep to be able to share those things and very freeing. Do you see this as sort of part two to what was a terrific career high point with ‘Big Little Lies’ in that abusive relationship? If this is, you know, a more positive version of an S&M relationship?
