Interview by Markin Abras Photos courtesy of Leylah Fernandez Miami Living: Is there something new or different about your game? Leylah Fernandez: I wouldn’t say my style has changed drastically, but I do feel like I’ve made fewer mistakes and become a lot more consistent overall. There’s also been improvement in my serve speed and acceleration, which is exciting. Hopefully, I can keep building on that progress. Miami Living: Any recent moments from your work that stand out? Fernandez: My foundation, Leylah Annie & Family Foundation (www.instagram.com/leylahanniefoundation), hosted its first tennis clinic last year, which was such a special moment for me. I’ve always wanted to give back to the communities that helped me get to where I am, and it’s been amazing to have my whole family involved in the organization. We actually just held our second clinic in Los Angeles before Indian Wells, and it was another success. It’s something we’re really hoping to do more of. Miami Living: What’s one lesson you’ve learned this past year? Fernandez: It’s been a journey, but I’ve definitely learned the importance of patience. I tend to focus a lot on the end result, so I sometimes forget to enjoy the process of getting better. This year, I’ve worked on being more present and appreciating the moment. Miami Living: Where do you call home, and how often do you sleep in your own bed? Fernandez: Home for me is wherever my family is. I’m proud to be Canadian, and I also have family in Ecuador, but when it comes to my bed, it’s definitely in Miami. My parents and I have lived here for a while, and we really love it. Unfortunately, I don’t get to spend much time here—probably only about seven days so far this year! Miami Living: What’s a memorable non-tennis experience you’ve had recently? Fernandez: Earlier this year, my team and I had a day off in Melbourne, and we just had fun with it. We went go-karting, hit up an arcade, and really switched off. I’m always focused on being the best I can be on the court, but sometimes I need to take a step back and just decompress. Plus, I love a little competition outside of tennis, so it was a great way to relax and have some fun. Miami Living: What’s something funny or quirky about you? Fernandez: Well, I absolutely love to sing—but I’m terrible at it! I’m pretty sure I sound like two cats fighting when I try… It’s not pretty, but I still enjoy it.
