Interview by Markin Abras Photos courtesy of Daniil Medvedev Miami Living Magazine sat down with Daniil Medvedev, the 2023 Miami Open champion, to discuss his recent experiences, lessons learned, and personal moments off the court. Miami Living: Last time you were in Miami, your game was already at a high level. Since then, has anything changed—any surprises or new developments? Daniil Medvedev: Not really anything unexpected, but I’m always working to improve the areas where I’m not as strong. That process takes time, but the goal is to keep getting better and play at a higher level than I did at the start of the season. Miami Living: Looking back at the past year, is there a moment that really stands out for you? Medvedev: Definitely the Australian Open last year. It was a big highlight. The season had its ups and downs—some great results, some not so great—but that tournament was special. I came really close and had some incredible matches. Miami Living: What’s one thing you’ve learned, either on or off the court, that has really stuck with you? Medvedev: Balance. Last year, I struggled with it—managing emotions, staying calm, making time for my family, keeping up with training, getting enough rest, and still enjoying myself while staying professional. Finding that balance is something I need to get better at. Miami Living: Speaking of balance… with your schedule, how often do you actually get to be home? Medvedev: Not much! (laughs) If I add it all up, maybe two and a half months a year, but even that is broken up by short breaks—four or five days here and there, maybe a week. And those days don’t always feel like real time at home. You spend the first day unpacking and then wonder, “Should I even bother? I have to pack again in a few days.” If you get home late after a flight, that day doesn’t really count either. So yeah, not as much as I’d like! Miami Living: Outside of tennis, what’s been a really special moment for you recently? Medvedev: The birth of my second child—nothing tops that. It’s one of those life-changing moments that stays with you forever. Funny enough, I had two tough tournaments, but because of the baby, I got to be home more, which was amazing. Losing early in a tournament can feel empty if you’re alone, but coming home to my family made all the difference. Miami Living: Fans see you as this intense competitor, but what’s something about you they might not expect? Medvedev: I think people would be surprised by how different I am off the court. I’m way calmer in real life. Maybe once a year, I’ll have trouble expressing emotions, but on the court, it’s every single match!
