Interview by Markin Abras Photos courtesy of Carlos Alcaraz Miami Living Magazine chatted with Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 Miami Open champion and the 2024 French Open champion, about his journey over the past year, lessons learned, and some personal moments off the court. Miami Living: Looking back at your last time in Miami, what’s something new or different about your game since then? Carlos Alcaraz: I’ve changed a few things technically, like tweaking my backhand, movement, and serve. But the biggest shift has been in my mental preparation—the mental strength I bring to tournaments and matches. I feel like I’ve improved just a little in a few areas over the past year. Miami Living: You’ve had an incredible year. What’s one moment you’re especially proud of? Alcaraz: I’d have to say winning the French Open. Coming off an injury, I had doubts about my clay season, but to end up winning Roland Garros was a huge moment for me. Miami Living: That must have been an unforgettable experience. What’s the biggest lesson you took away from that victory? Alcaraz: I learned that I don’t need so many matches to play good tennis (laughs). The mental part is key—staying strong during tough moments. At the French Open, I faced a really tough time in the tournament, but I managed to handle it properly, and that was the most important lesson I learned. Miami Living: Off the court, tell us where you call home—and how often are you actually there? Alcaraz: I call Murcia, Spain home. It’s where I live with my parents and friends. As for how often I sleep in my own bed, I’d say maybe two months per year, something like that. Miami Living: That’s not much time at home! What’s a memorable non-tennis experience you’ve had recently? Alcaraz: After winning the French Open, I went to Ibiza, and that was a really special moment for me. It was a great time to relax and enjoy after such a big victory!
