do. I learnt to cut patterns from a legendary Savile row cutter (George Crossman) who generously passed on all his knowledge to me in my early twenties. Learning the importance of quality and timelessness, clothes that are well cut and beautifully put together is inherent in everything we make. At Timothy Everest we saw the importance of creating a special atmosphere in store… working from a lovely townhouse with great music and full of characters it was far removed from a sterile retail experience. The great Savile row tailors also build a special relationship with their clients which is very personable and loyal. For me and Luke it was important to give our take on all these impressions and remove some of the dust and stuffiness associated with the old Savile Row. Not only in the product (feeling more modern) but also in the way we serve it. ML: Thom Sweeney has evolved from a private tailoring service in Mayfair to a global luxury brand with stores in London, New York, and LA. What key factors have contributed to the brand’s international success and growth? LS: Well I think there’s a couple of core values-Firstly, always striving to make a beautiful product. We were very open to learning not just the Savile row way of cutting but also the Italian (Milanese and Neapolitan) style. This gave birth to our silhouette which I think works well for that young at heart international guy. We took all our tailoring principles to build a ready to wear collection and dress our customers all the way through from Monday to Sunday. Secondly, building a great team to help take care of all our customers properly is key too. We always want it to feel very special when you come in store or buy online. Whether you’re having a handmade bespoke suit or shopping ready to wear, it should be a great experience. Being a little bit brave to open internationally has helped us learn and grow too, so I think Miami will only broaden our horizons and we’ll get to meet some great new people too!! ML: With the opening of ‘The Loft’ in Los Angeles and your established presence in London and New York, how do you balance maintaining traditional craftsmanship while appealing to modern, style-conscious clients across different cities? TW: We believe that in all the places we’re opening, there’s enough clients who appreciate the craft and quality of what we do…. So we’ll make sure the quality is great throughout. Of course we’ll make one off special pieces and capsule collections geared towards the Miami climate and style too. London is also our training ground for bringing on talent, so in each new location we have a trained tailor to make sure we’re keeping up the high standards!
