Oscar winning actresses Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore star in brand-new Netflix film ‘May December’, which will be streaming from December 1st. The movie directed by Todd Haynes [‘Far From Heaven’, ‘I’m Not There’] follows an actress [Portman] who travels to Georgia to meet and study the life of the controversial woman [played by Julianne Moore] she is set to play in a film. It is loosely inspired by the story of Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher in the Seattle suburbs who at the age of 34 began an affair with her sixth-grade student, Vili Falaau, age 12. Charles Melton also stars. Here, Natalie and Julianne talk about working together for the first time, the themes in the film, working with director Todd Haynes and more.. Jenny Davis/ The Interview People Congratulations on a wonderful movie, tell us how this project first came about? Natalie Portman: I’ll start first. It was just immediately so clear how rich these characters were and how rare it was to find something that was so specific and so detailed and so complicated, where you never really know how you feel about any of the characters. And then, of course, yeah I guess it was actor’s dreaming that led me to have the producer’s eye that was like, ‘Wish Todd Haynes could do this!’ And of course Todd bought along the dream of Julianne [Moore] and Charles [Melton], who are just the best people possible to work with. Your alliances shift throughout the movie. After having made the movie have your feelings towards your character elizabeth shifted? Natalie Portman: Well I feel like you can’t really judge a character when you play it. You just have to kind of understand what they’re doing at the time they are doing it, which also sometimes like I always find it really funny that so many acting instructions are like, ‘Figure out the motivation’ – and I’m like, ‘I don’t know my motivation in life!’ [laughs] I feel like most humans don’t. So I think just understanding what propels their actions, even though they might not be conscious of it. And I think that’s how most of these characters are operating, which is kind of unconsciously. They are fascinating and you never know what they are going to do next? Julianne, can you talk about your incredible relationship with todd haynes? Are you guys kind of like a package deal? Julianne Moore: It’s been a great miracle of my life to have this collaboration with him, I honestly can’t believe it. I was telling him that I walked by the building in New York where I first auditioned him for ‘Safe’ and I was like, ‘I can remember going up there and how nervous I was and what I was wearing’ and all that. So no, I love the idea that people think we’re a package deal but I’m just so grateful every time he offers me a job. And this one came completely out of the blue, it really did. He was like, ‘Natalie Portman sent me this script and I thought of you, what do you think of this.’ And it was amazing, astonishing and really just another great gift that came my way. But yeah, it’s not a fait a complis, believe me, it’s like he has lots of people to choose from, so I’m very happy when he chooses me. It seems like there is an improvement for
